Ep 212: The Mummy (2017) - MumMay!

Tom Cruise plays a soldier who stumbles into an ancient tomb and accidentally “unwraps” a problem better left sealed, a vengeful princess with plans that are perhaps a bit too forward-thinking for the living. What follows is a globetrotting scramble involving secret societies, supernatural chaos, and Cruise doing his usual sprinting like cardio might fix a curse. The film aims for dark mythmaking; it was supposed to kick off Universal's now-defunct Dark Universe, but occasionally feels caught between tones, as if it can’t quite decide whether it's a horror or action film, so it tries to be both and ends up a little… entombed in its own ambition.

The series mixes street level crime and car chases with Imperial tensions and some of the best lightsaber battles we've seen to date. Oh, and there's a BIG surprise at the end! Ep 211: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - MumMay!

In this installment of The Mummy franchise, the O’Connells head to China, swap out Evie (now played by Maria Bello), and wake up a terracotta emperor (Jet Li) who can shapeshift and knows martial arts. Brendan Fraser is still doing his best “punch first, figure it out later” routine, but the formula is starting to feel a bit played out. At least they left the Nintendo 64-level CG scorpion man out this time around!

Ep 210: The Mummy Returns - MumMay!

MumMay continues with more adventures of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, but this time their joined by... ahh man... a little baby shitkid. Rick and Evie are now married with a kid, which would be stressful enough without resurrecting both the Imhotep and an angry cartoon character, The Scorpion King (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). The sequel doubles down on everything: more action, more lore, more sub-Saturday morning cartoon CG, and more instances of Rick solving problems by running directly at them. It’s louder, faster, and occasionally ridiculous.

HTSF Ep 78: The Mandalorian Ch 24: The Return

Today, we wrap up The Mandalorian just in time for the movie with Chapter 24, “The Return.” Din Djarin escapes captivity with the quiet determination of someone who’s done explaining himself, while Bo-Katan Kryze leads a Mandalorian counterattack that turns Mandalore into a jetpack war zone. All this while, Moff Gideon makes one last overconfident stand in armor that screams, “I wish I were Sith.” The whole thing wraps up fairly decisively, leaving room for continuing adventures, of course, and we get some teasers of mysteries to come.

Ep 208: Big Trouble in Little China - Mental Health

Every year we take a break from the "bad" movies for MENTAL HEALTH MONTH, a month in which we talk about movies we love! We're closing out this week with Jack's pick, 1986's legendary BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell and the great James Hong.

Big Trouble in Little China follows trucker Jack Burton, a man deeply committed to the idea that he’s the hero, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, as he stumbles into a supernatural turf war in San Francisco’s Chinatown. What starts as helping a friend (the actual hero of the story, Wang Chi) quickly spirals into ancient sorcery, cursed villains, and a running tally of things Jack doesn’t understand but confidently narrates anyway. The movie plays it straight while everything onscreen refuses to behave that way, letting Jack’s bravado do most of the comedic work.

Ep 206: True Romance w PJ of The PJ Bidwell Band - Mental Health Month

Every year, we take a break from the "bad" movies for MENTAL HEALTH MONTH, a month in which we talk about movies we love! This week, we have something very special, a listener requested pick from Pj Bidwell, who will be joining us on the episode! 1993's TRUE ROMANCE starring Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette and Gary Oldman.

True Romance follows Clarence, a comic-book-store romantic with questionable impulse control, who falls for call girl Alabama and immediately decides their love story should include murder, cocaine, and a cross-country escape. What he lacks in foresight, he makes up for in absolute conviction, dragging Alabama into a whirlwind of mobsters, movie producers, and increasingly tense conversations that tend to end in gunfire. The film plays like a fairy tale that wandered into the wrong neighborhood and refused to leave.

we discuss the penultimate episode of The Mandalorian (thus far), Chapter 23, "The Spies." Din and Bo-Katan are uniting opposing factions of Mandalore just in time to attempt to retake the planet. While scouting, they discover survivors rolling around on land pirate ships, as well as a hidden Imperial Remnant base belonging to, you guessed it, Moff Gideon. Mandalorian vs. Mandotrooper combat ensues, casualties are suffered, and our heroes come one step closer to stopping the sinister Gideon and reclaiming their homeworld.
